Ringing Report 24 April 2026
This was a short session with only five nets. The weather was cold and overcast to begin with until the sun came out and it warmed up. The catch was small but included seven different species of warbler including Whitethroat and Lesser Whitethroat.
On 19 March 2026 we ringed a male Chaffinch. (See our ringing report for 18/19 March for a photo of the Chaffinch). It was found killed by a cat at Dalby, Fyn, Denmark, a little south of Copenhagen, about 785km ENE on 4 April 2026. Recently we have not caught any Chaffinches in the summer months. It used to be a common resident bird but would appear to be becoming a winter visitor? The cause of the decline is the trichomonosis parasite which has also affected Greenfinches.
In addition, we heard Corn Buntings and Greenfinches singing. When the sun was out there were an abundance of Holly Blue butterflies and Orange Tip butterflies.
